Artists get creative with chalk on downtown sidewalks
DANBURY -- Hunched over and on her knees, Gina Furnari, a graduate of Hartford Art School, lightly gripped a blue chalk pastel in her hand.
Though a cool breeze was blowing, she worked feverishly on getting the likeness just right. In one hand she held an antique photo for reference.
"He was my great-grandfather, Paolo Signore," she said of the photo, "and he wrote a march called 'Danbury Crowns Them All.'"
Signore, an Italian immigrant and composer, penned the tribute that celebrated Danbury's status as the "Hat Making Capitol of the World." The phrase was the motto of the city in the late 1880s.
